College Park, where he taught for 35 years. In 1992, he founded the Black Saga Competition, a learning activity that helps elementary and middle schools teach the African American experience. His book, Black Saga, was published in 1995. This will be the ninth year that Arnold Elementary has competed in Black Saga. Dr. Christian no longer conducts the school level competitions, due to the number of schools statewide that participate. However, he has agreed to visit Arnold on Feb. 4th at 12:30,prior to our 1:15 PM contest, to meet parents and to talk about the Black Saga experience. I plan to hold a "meet & greet" in our media center until 1:15, and invite parents to remain for the competition. We have 5 strong teams - top 2 teams will go on to the state level contest at Towson on March 13TH. - RMB *** February 1-5 we will be celebrating "National Green Week" with a waste-free lunch week at Arnold elementary. During that week, students will have the opportunity to have their name entered in the drawing to win reusable lunch containers by bringing in a completely waste-free lunch to school. A waste-free lunch means nothing has to be thrown away-- so drinks are in reusable thermoses, sandwiches are in plastic reusable containers, as are snacks- not baggies. We are joining this nationwide effort in hope of keeping 15 million pounds of trash out of landfills in 1 week. Winners of the drawing will be announced at the end of the day on Friday, February 5. |
